A creative life is an amplified life. Itโ€™s a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life.

Magical things emerge when we make time to sit down to write. Even more magical things happen when we get to share the benefits of our process in good company. Doing these things with a group of people over time can lead to a deep sense of belonging as well as more creative ease and flow.

This special group is a rare opportunity to practice writing in community โ€“ and to sustain your practice.

With a rhythm of three weeks on, one week off (more on that below!), participants will play with different approaches to writing practice every month, allowing for the natural ebb and flow of any creative process.

Together, we will cultivate a container premised on curiosity. What happens if I try thisโ€ฆ? What happens when I stop doing thatโ€ฆ?

Rather than aiming to produce fully developed work, our focus will be on generating new pieces and finding more ease in the process.

The Flow

From September to June, we will follow a rhythm of meeting on Zoom for three consecutive Tuesdays followed by a โ€œrestโ€ week.

Week 1:
Each writer will write 11 things to bring and read out loud in the group. We will have the opportunity to share reflections and comments. At the end of week 1, each writer will select something from their 11s to use as a prompt for week 2.

Week 2:
Each writer will bring a new piece of writing based on what they identified in week 1. Again, we will share, reflect, and connect.

Week 3:
โ€œReal-timeโ€ writing: We will do a timed, prompted freewrite together, exploring the practice of writing โ€œalone togetherโ€ and experiencing what happens for us when we just show up and write.

The Ebb

After each three-week cycle, we will have a โ€œrestโ€ week.

Why?

The creative process is not linear and we are not machines. Building in time to rest opens up the space for our minds to wander, our subconscious to synthesize seemingly disparate things we may be taking in and pondering, and our lives to unfold.

Rather than relating to โ€œebbโ€ periods with fear, these rest weeks help us internalize the knowing that it is natural and needed to have down time.

This group will offer encouragement, accountability, experimentation, and freedom. We will not be โ€œworkshoppingโ€ writing in a traditional sense as much as witnessing and uplifting each otherโ€™s words and creative process.

Powerful Words from Past Participants

I feel like something in me has resurrected from being dormant for a long time. The simple act of writing and reading othersโ€™ words has helped me to say to myself, yes I can do this.

I love the creative process. The not knowing until it is what it is. The diving inward and resurfacing with a little something , something unique. Expressing my experience instead of just listening and responding. Finding my voice. Sounds cliche but now I really get what that means. The blank page filled up with words, my words that say something about something. I am alive.

Jena creates a space of discovery. She cracks you open. She helps you remember why on earth you wanted to write in the first place. Practicing with her and the other participants was pure joy. There were no โ€˜shouldsโ€™ or โ€˜have toโ€™sโ€™ or judgments. Just love, generosity, and practice. I am so grateful for this experience.
