11 Things from 2022

I was thinking:
so this is how you swim inward,
so this is how you flow outward,
so this is how you pray.
— Mary Oliver, from "Five A.M. in the Pinewoods"

1. This was the year I learned that I would either learn from the past or be doomed to repeat it.

2. This was the year I came to understand that healing is a very full-time job, and being wishy-washy just doesn't fly.

3. This was the year I saw the goodness that comes when you really commit and recommit and then commit again.

4. This was the year I stopped worrying that being positive is something inauthentic or not the whole picture, and instead recognized that joy is my essence and nothing could be truer. This was the year I began to transform my relationship to worry itself.

5. This was the year a matryoshka tattoo turned into a full sleeve that looks a whole lot like our backyard of our new home, teeming with birds, blossoms, and cute critters.

6. This was the year my focus got even clearer, my voice stronger, and my heart surer. This was the year of truly experiencing that anything that isn't presently happening in this exact moment exists only in my mind.

7. This was the year of gnomes and crock pots and getting my piano back and hearing owls in the night and coyotes screaming in the woods. This was the year of smiling at strangers in grocery stores and live music again, masks notwithstanding.

8. This was the year of a writing desk facing east instead of west. This was the year of sending out two manuscripts and readiness and prayers for a publisher in 2023. This was the year of loving my work more than ever and giving thanks every day.

9. This was the year of knowing I am doing exactly what I'm meant to be doing. This was the year of focusing on what went right, what went well, what grew, what fell away, and what has always been here.

10. This was the year of transition in so many ways. I'm grateful for all of it and I'm glad that it's over.

11. I am ready for January, top of the year, my birthday month, and a brand new beginning. Bring it on.
