Fear is the Common Denominator

For one day, or for one day for a week, refrain from something you habitually do to run away, to escape. Pick something concrete, such as overeating or excessive sleeping or overworking or spending too much time texting or checking e-mails. Make a commitment to yourself to gently and compassionately work with refraining from this habit for this one day. Really commit to it. Do this with the intention that it will put you in touch with the underlying anxiety or uncertainty that you’ve been avoiding. Do it and see what you discover.

Along with the usual Monday greeting and invitation to write what's true, I shared this quote over in the Truth + Beauty Club this week.

Many of us avoid sitting to write. There is no universal reason for this, but fear is often a common denominator (one math concept I actually understood all those years ago). By tuning into how we escape, we also grow more aware of what it is we're trying to get away from.

Writing is often a way of doing the opposite: Turning to face the fears. It's a way of doing that on your own terms, in your own timing.

The purpose of the Truth + Beauty Club is exactly that: To provide space and encouragement for the practice of showing up and saying what's true, knowing there is real power in the act of naming something.

We don't judge, advise, or critique. We witness, listen, and lift up.

Come join us! It's $36/month for the group, or you can choose the higher tiers and get discounts on my other groups and a monthly coaching session. If finances are a concern, please contact me directly.
